Open Studio 7/7/2013

What is the Open Studio?

Cats out of the bag now. Artist Shawn Langley has joined the Rapid City team. He's going to be working on a 12 issue, all-villains, story arc and has already started some of the sketching. And, as is Rapid City tradition, he is sharing them in the Open Studio.

This is the first drawing ever of my character Icicle. And I like it. I like that she does not have long hair, but also not a "pixie cut". My favorite detail is the ice studs on the costume. Cool. -Josh

Ok, some slight revisions here. We talked about thickening up the costume a bit. I don't want the silky-thin look that a lot of costumes have. I want something with a little weight to it. I like that you have started to work that in here. The ice motif as dickie-type thing that hangs down... that looks real cool, but I don't know how well it suits the character. I do like the one on the bottom right. I especially like jagged bottom line of the top. If that is like a thicker waist-coat, the the stuff under it could be that thinner silky material, or even bare. I like it. -Josh

[I might put it together, not as a flap hanging down, as I've drawn it, but as one piece, with the "flap section" outlined. i keep thinking leather armor, like any medieval style, i.e. Game of Thrones, with metal rivets/studs, but those rivets actually being the ice buds you suggested. --Shawn]

I like that thinking. Keep the medieval suggestion subtle. Also, the ice buds from which he spikes and ice armor will grow should be like rivet holes, or grommets, when she is powered down. They are holes down to her skin, through which she can grow her ice. -Josh

Issue 35

The script for issue #35 of my super-villain revenge epic, Rapid City, has just been posted. Read it here.

Panel 4. Shannon walking out into her hall, holding the bat out in front of her. There is light coming from a door that is open a crack.

SHANNON

Hey! There someone in here?

Panel 5. Largest panel on the page. Shanon has opened the bathroom door and discovered Coil in there. He has no shirt, just some sparse wires wrapped here and there. He is bruised and bloody.. but not badly injured. He is hunched over and vomiting in the toilet.

SHANNON

Coil! What are you doing here?

Panel 6. Small shot of Coil's face. He is looking back at Shannon. His humanity is gone. There is vomit on his lips and bloody scrapes on his face. His expression is that of a sick, injured, dog.

Read and discuss all of the Rapid City scripts here.

Rapid production

As I have mentioned elsewhere, Rapid City is in a few different stages of production at any one moment.I am constantly writing scripts. In fact, this project began as an experiment in which I challenged myself to write a complete comic book script every single month. I used this site to post those scripts, and updates on my process of creating them. Over a year into that script project, Kav started to draw comics from those scripts. He is churning out issues faster and faster, but I never let up on my script-a-month schedule.

Kav is doing an amazing job drawing Rapid City #6, but at that very same moment, I am starting work on the script for Rapid City #35.

The fun situation that this creates for is that Kav, who probably knows more about Rapid City than anyone outside of my head, is still more than two years out of date with what is going on in Rapid City!

Earlier today I posted the notification that issue #34 was finished, and in doing so I called it a "supervillain comic book". This led Kav comment...

I thought it was a superhero book dude. -Kav

Kav, it is a superhero comic book. But things change. You may have noticed an already darkening tone in the early Rapid City stories. I don't want to spoil it, but in issue #24 some very big decisions are made. And then, from issue 25 on, the series focuses the supervillain community in Rapid City.

But don't worry, by 37 or 38 it will be a superhero book again. -Josh

always breaking the rules! great! PS what if some Rapid City Superheroes visit their nemeses in Slowville?
